It's new set time! The Duskmourn: House of Horror prerelease was last weekend and the normal set release is this Friday. Grab your flashlights, don't split up, and we might just survive this set!

If you would like to see a question of yours answered in one of our upcoming articles, chances for that go way up if you send them directly to us. For short questions, you can send them to our Twitter account at @CranialTweet, and if you have a longer question, you can send it to our e-mail at moko@cranialinsertion.com . Most questions sent to us get answered in less than 24 hours.

Q: What is a Room?

A: Room is a new subtype found only on enchantments. They are somewhat like split cards. You can cast one side or the other and you "unlock" that half of the card when it enters. You can later pay the other cost to "unlock" the other half. "Unlocking" is done at sorcery speed as a special action that does not use the stack.

Q: What's the mana value of a room card?

A: In every zone other than the battlefield or stack, the mana value is the total of the two halves. Bottomless Pool // Locker Room for example has mana value 6 in your library or graveyard. On the stack, its mana value is equal to only the side you're casting. On the battlefield its mana value is equal to each unlocked side combined. This means Bottomless Pool // Locker Room's mana value could be 6 if both are unlocked, 1 or 5 if only one door is unlocked, or zero if neither door is unlocked.

Q: What happens if I Replenish a Room card from my graveyard to the battlefield?

A: Both sides will enter the battlefield locked. Anytime a Room enters the battlefield without being cast, it will have no name and no abilities.

Here's Johnny!
Q: Does Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines double the triggered ability of Bottomless Pool when I cast it?

A: She does not. Elesh Norn doubles triggers caused by permanents entering. The trigger of Bottomless Pool is caused by the room being unlocked. Yes, even if you cast Bottomless Pool, it entering causes an unlock, then the unlock causes the trigger.

Q: If I cast Meddling Mage can I name Bottomless Pool // Locker Room to prevent both halves from being cast?

A: You can only name one side or the other. Whichever side you don't name can still be cast normally.

Q: What is Impending?

A: Impending N lets you cast a creature for less mana, but it enters with with N time counters and won't be a creature until it loses all its time counters (of which it loses one on each of your end steps). Every card in Duskmourn with impending is an enchantment creature, and will have an enters effect that is useful even while not a creature.

Q: If I cast Copy Enchantment copying my opponent's Overlord of the Boilerbilges which currently has two time counters on it, will my Overlord be a creature? And if so, will it have two or four time counters?

A: Your copy of Overlord will be a creature with no time counters. When you copy a permanent, it doesn't copy its counters.

Q: What does it mean to manifest dread?

A: If a player is instructed to manifest dread, they look at the top two cards of their library, they manifest one of those cards, and then put the other in their graveyard.

Q: Ok, then what does it mean to manifest?

A: To manifest, you place a card face-down on the battlefield as a 2/2 colorless creature with no name, abilities, or mana cost. At any time, you can look at the front face of any manifest creatures you control. At any time you have priority, if a manifest creature you control is a creature on its front face, you may turn it face up by paying its normal mana cost. This does not use the stack.

Q: If the only cards in my graveyard are Overlord of the Boilerbilges and Drossforge Bridge, will I have met the delirium threshold for Demonic Counsel? Or do I need to have at least four cards in my graveyard?

A: Yes, you can "have delirium" with fewer than four cards. You only need to have four or more card types among the cards in your graveyard. There are currently only nine card types you can get into your graveyard: Creature, land, instant, sorcery, artifact, enchantment, planeswalker, kindred, and battle.

Q: If I boomerang my opponent's Balustrade Wurm which has a finality counter on it, does it get exiled instead of going to my opponent's hand?

A: It will go to your opponent's hand. The finality counter means "if this permanent would go to the graveyard, exile it instead". It can still move to other zones like hand, exile, or library just fine.

Q: I have both rooms of Charred Foyer // Warped Space unlocked. At the beginning of my upkeep, Charred Foyer exiled Cyclonic Rift. Can I use Warped Space to overload Cyclonic Rift without paying any mana?

A: You can not. Casting a spell without paying its mana cost is an alternative cost. Overloading a spell is also an alternative cost. You can't use two alternative costs at the same time. You can either bounce one nonland permanent for free or you must pay to overload Cyclonic Rift.

But not let the flesh
pollute the corn
Q: If I Disenchant my opponent's Conductive Machete while the trigger to manifest is on the stack, do they still get to manifest even though the Equipment is gone?

A: They do. When a triggered ability tries to resolve, if it had no targets to start with or still has at least one target, it will attempt to do as much as it can, even if it can't do some parts, such as attach a non-existent Equipment to a freshly made creature.

Q: I've controlled Cult Healer for multiple turns. Earlier this turn, I cast two copies of Case of the Uneaten Feast. If my attacking Cult Healer goes unblocked this turn, will I gain 3 or 6 life from its lifelink?

A: You only gain 3 life. Lifelink is not a triggered ability, but a static ability that modifies damage and does not stack.

Q: I control an unlocked Dollmaker's Shop. If I have two opponents and attack them simultaneously, one with a Bear Cub and one with a Squire, do I get one Toy token or two Toy tokens?

A: You get two Toy tokens. Dollmaker's Shop triggers once for each different opponent you attack.

Q: I triggered my Infernal Phantom's eerie ability by resolving Overlord of the Boilerbilges. Then later that same turn, I attacked with the Phantom. It died during combat. Will it deal 4 damage with its trigger? Or 2 damage since it only has 2 power in the graveyard?

A: Infernal Phantom's last trigger will use what's called "Last Known Information". Last known information is the stats the permanent had the last time it was on the battlefield. In this case, it was a 4/3, so it will deal 4 damage.

Q: I cast Orphans of the Wheat during my last turn. So far this turn I have cast two Bear Cubs. If I attack with the Orphans, can I tap those Bear Cubs with its triggered ability to make the Orphans grow?

A: You can. "Summoning sickness" only prevents creatures from attacking or paying the cost. You can tap creatures as a cost even if they are summoning sick, so long as it's not paying a cost.

Q: I have no cards in my graveyard, can I even cast Under the Skin?

A: You can! Under the Skin doesn't need a target to be cast. Not only that, it can return the card you put into your graveyard with its own Manifest Dread, if it happens to be a permanent card.

Q: My Unwilling Vessel died with two possession counters and three +1/+1 counters. Will the Spirit token I make be a 2/2 or a 5/5?

A: If will be a 5/5. Vessel's dies ability counts all counters, not just possession counters.

I'm all answered out, see you next time.
